  1. wow this site is awesome, too bad its plagued with problems, but the main one im concerned about is backgrounds, why cant i get a transparent background. yall have great fonts bu ti cant do anything with them because when i put them on a site its a gigantic block. thats so very frustrating

  2. Anon, thanks for the report. The default format for FIG is black text on white non-transparent background. Is that what you're seeing? You can get black text on transparent background by clicking transparent-yes on the control panel.

Please give a bit more detail about what you are seeing and I can probably help resolve the issue.

  3. I'm having the same issue. I've tried using the control panel to select transparent yes, but it just creates a solid black box when I try to copy it.

    ReplyDelete
  4. When pasting a transparent image, the destination program has no background information to work with so it uses black by default. If the text color is also black, all you see is a black box. If you set the foreground color to something other than black, red for example, you'll see red text on a black background.

You can solve the issue in FIG by saving the image to your local disk and then use the destination program to open it from there.

Please make a post to say if this resolves the issue.

  5. I don't like that the new update now only lets you make small images. (working canvas; 480x320)

I need big images because i am sticking them in a A3 book for an art project.

If you need to reduce server load you should leave this (480x320) as the default size, but offer a feature that lets you make a larger image if the user wishes.

I also hate how the default image is a .jpg file, as i find that all jpegs have small dots around the text and are not as clear as .png's and are no-where near the quality. Now even when i convert my image to .png it still has the dots around it reducing its quality.

Your site was excellent before this update. Now i find myself relying on Microsoft Word and its old boring fonts so that i can get the quality i need.

  6. Hi Brodie, Sorry you don't like the changes to FIG. To be honest, I don't like it either but it was necessary to do that or there would be no site at all. My hosting company had already shut me down and required changes to allow it to be restored. The hosting company I used last year also kicked me out.

As you know, FIG is a free site. Unless, I impose a charge on users (which will be rejected by most) I must rely on low-cost shared hosting services. FIG has lots of users however and overwhelms shared servers causing every domain hosted there to have poor response.

For your project, I suggest downloading a program like Irfanview along with the fonts you are interested in and do the project on your local computer. Each font on FIG can be downloaded for free. Just click the button on the toolbar (second from the bottom) and you will be linked to a download site for the current font.

Meanwhile, I'm continuing to work on the problem with the hosting company. if possible, some of the features that you miss can be restored in the future.

Thanks for letting me know your feelings about this.

  7. Um i want to upload an image from my computer but im not able to.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hi, Place the mouse cursor over the image, right mouse click and a menu will pop up where you can access "save image as" or "save picture as". Click there and you'll get a dialog box where you enter file name and folder for saving to your local hard disk. Please repost here if that doesn't work for you.

    Thx, Jeff

  9. Hi, I uploaded an image and then typed the text but whenever i press create, the picture disppears and if i do the opposite but then the text disappears.
    What can i do?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hi, When you upload the image, it goes to the foreground layer. Then when you type text, the text image also goes to the foreground layer, replacing whatever was there before. To compose multiple images, move the uploaded image to the composition layer (top button on the toolbar) , then when you create the text image, the upload will remain on the composition layer. You can then drag/drop position the text image and move it to the composition layer where it will be meged with the first image.

There is a video tutorial "Composing Multiple Image" on this topic. View it by selecting it from the drop-down menu above right.

    Thanks, Jeff

  11. Hi..
I got the same problem about creating a font with an invisible background colour..i got the answer to it from above coments..
I would like to tell that this programme is simply THE BEST..!!

    Thanks and keep it up..!

  12. Can i create a text with an invisible background?? Plz give me a answer...emergancy..
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  13. how do you center the text your trying to make?

    ReplyDelete
  14. You can center text both horizontally and vertically using format controls on the control panel. Access the control panel by clicking the crown icon to the far right of the create button. For best results, it's a good idea to also specify the image dimensions at the same time. If you're not sure of the dimensions you want, use 480x320 and then crop unnecessary white space at the end.
Please post a follow up if you still have issues.

    Thanks for using FIG

  17. How do you include the "@" symbol and other symbols in your image?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks for the post. There are a few cases such as '@, #, \,' where FIG strips the symbol out before the image is generated. Its done to prevent crashing the server when used in certain ways. I have an untested fix that I'll work on today and try to have available tomorrow. In many other cases, a font does not support symbols. The font author does not provide a glyph for a given symbol. All you can do then is pick a different font.

I'll post an update here tomorrow.

    ~Jeff

    ReplyDelete
  19. the '@' symbol is now working, it cannot be alone on the input however. it must have characters before and after it. I'll keep working to improve this and post updates here.

  20. do i need permission to use these fonts or can i just use them in any of my publications...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Good question. Thanks for asking.

The fonts on FIG come from free font sites like Dafont and are "Free For Non-Commercial Use"

If you plan to use commercially, you should go to the download site (click the second button from the bottom on the right-hand toolbar), download the font, and review the license file. In the license file, there is usually a statement about how to obtain permission or purchase a commercial use license.

In any event, copyright law protects the creator of a font and places burden on the user to determine rights for a particular use.

Some font creators are aggressive about protecting their rights so be careful.

  22. Basic question:
Once I create my text image with color, size, etc how do I save it and send it to someone as a jpg file? Thanks.

    Phil
    ptmcmillan@gmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Phil, You can email an image by clicking the envelope button on the toolbar (left side, second from the bottom) There is a blog post about emailing

You can also right click on the image then click the 'save image as' or 'save picture as' items on the pop up menu to save the image to your local hard drive.

  24. Hello Jeff,

Wondering if you might be able to share some info. I am using Shota-san's code to build a previewer for vinyl lettering. I would like to be able to save the resulting image and e-mail it as an invoice. Any ideas how one can save the image to a file on the server?

    Thanks,

    Rick

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well damn. Guess I should have read your reply to Phil's post above!

    I'll go read now.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Rick, The new version of FIG uses ImageMagick rather than Shota's PHP libs. IM offers a lot of additional features and control for text images. Most can be demonstrated on FIG. For example, you can outline text, deform it, shadow it, etc. The old version of FIG (http://dingbatty.com) still uses Shota's scripts.

  30. Hey! LOVE this thing more than life itself. I just have one issue... I use a wide variety of fonts, which I'm extremely glad you have many that I use, but the ones I REALLY need aren't there. Is there anyway that you can add a font upload option? I know that would be difficult (seeing as I've only found ONE site that will do it...) but I really need some different fonts so I can make my layouts. Any ideas/help?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks for your nice compliments about FIG. At the moment there is no feature that allows uploading your own fonts. Its a good idea though and I'll seriously consider adding it. Meanwhile, I'll gladly post some fonts for you if you send me a link to where I can download them. Fonts must have license for free use however as I can't control access once they are posted.

  32. when I create something and copy the url to post on a fourm it will show up for a bit then it will go blank why is that.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi, Thanks for posting. The server automatically deletes images about 10 minutes after they are created. Thats why they stop working shortly after you make the link. You'll need to download images you want to link to and host them on your server and then link to that. As an alternative, you can email them to TwitPic or Facebook. See the FIG blog for instructions

  34. Is there a way you can fill the font with an image, rather than a solid color?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi Misadventure, Thanks for posting. Try using "Pattern Filled Text" on the ImageMagick Editor menu. (click "IM" on the toolbar) It fills the text with the current foreground image.

    ~Jeff

  36. Hi,

For some reason it keeps sending me emails without the text (blank images).

Also a save feature would be really useful, as opposed to having to wait for slow e-mails to come through, on occasions I've had to wait over an hour for the image to be sent via e-mail.

Love the site but these few things could do with being fixed :D

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hi Alex. Thanks for the post. A couple of things might account for the missing image in the email. First is that all images are deleted after 5 minutes. They may still be visible in your browser but the emailer might be embedding an image that no longer exists. The email uses an embedded image rather than a linked image so once it is successfully emailed, it continues to exist even though the original has been deleted.

The second possibility is if the "use composed image" is checked on the email address box when no composed image exists.

Emailing images was working ok as of a few minutes ago.

You can save an image within 5 minutes of creation without emailing by right clicking on the image and following the "save as..." dialog on the popup menu.

Hope this helps & thanks for using FIG.

  38. I was wondering if you could add these fonts please

    Jersey Stories!

    Andalusian

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi, Thanks for the request. Jersey Stories is now posted. Its a demo font with lower case characters only and no other characters. Its very small too and needs a size of about 80 to be legible. If you know where a more complete character set is available, please post a URL.

The Andalusian font is posted with ambiguous license terms. I contacted the author for clarification/permission to use it on FIG. I'll post it as soon as I get cleared by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hi, Thanks for posting the font request. "Pointy" and "1-2-3 Go" are now available. I'm working on "Fantastic Pete" and hope to post it soon. In the form I found it at Dafont.com, its file size is 470k which fails most of the time because of the server resources it requires. I'll post it later and make an update here if I can slim down the file.

  49. Hi! I was wondering how i could us this on my tumblr as a heading/banner? is there any way thats possible. all i would need is a link or something like that

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi Niamh, Thanks for your post. Al the fonts here are licensed free for personal use by their author. So you can use the image any way you want to for non-commercial applications.

Once you create an image on the site however, it exists on the server for only about 5 minutes after which it is automatically deleted. You need to download it to your own PC or server before it expires. To do so, right click on the image and follow the menu to save the image to your local machine.

Please repost if I misunderstood your question or if you have further questions.

  51. 'bgtrans' not working ... please help

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hi, Please give a little more detail about the issue. Below are some general comments about background transparency

Background transparency is available for PNG images on the foreground layer. Its not directly supported for GIF images although you can create a non-transparent GIF image and add transparency after.

Transparency is lost when an image is moved to the composition layer. If desired, You can float a composed image back to the foreground layer and reset transparency.

All the above controls are found on the toolbars and control panel.

  59. Jeff,

First off this site is awesome!!!!

I watched your video on Youtube "Pattern Filled Text"

In that video you use Sling font and the Zebra tile.

My question is how do I get the outline of the letters, like in your video?

Also, when i go to the tiles it won't show the images

Thank You for the help, Jason

    ReplyDelete
  60. Jason, You can get outline text by setting a stroke width on the control panel. Also set the fill color to a contrasting color so you can see it. Maybe the admins will help with visibility of the tiles. You can use any image as a fill but that doesn't work either so there are two problems going on.

    ReplyDelete
  61. That worked like a charm. Unfortunately when I click "apply" for the pattern filled text it pops up with this message

"Operation failed. The original image is probably gone from the server.

    Please try it again."

I'll keep working with it, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again, Jason

  62. I get the same result. I'm the former webmaster of the site. I sent a PM to the current one about the issue. Stay tuned. Happy New Year.

  65. Just out of curiosity did you guys get rid of the font "astonished" and if so is there a way I can download it and use it on here??

  66. Thanks for the great site! To convert to jpg, do I need to be registered and logged on? When I hit the "convert to JPG" button, nothing happens. Where\how do I find the generated JPG file? I looked on the online help and didn't find anything regarding this. Thanks for your help!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. When you click on the button for convert to jpg, the foreground image is replaced with the same image only in jpg format. The previous foreground image in whatever format it was, is discarded.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Thanks for the reply. How do I get the image onto my computer? I tried emailing it (get error message) and also dragging and dropping it onto my computer (doesn't work.) I am on a Mac using firefox (older version)

  81. This is a great idea, nice solved! Respect!

But (sorry about that), it should be very userfull, if we can use it like an API - just to get such images directly in a requested URL like ...

    http:// interactimage.com /api/ png #000 #fff/ ?text=that+is+a+string+to+translate&font=andes&fontweight=bold&

... just work with (as a developer, for example) directly in my code like this URL as a src-String on an img -Tag.

I am quite sure that such a use would bring this tool far forward

    1. and by the way: there are still a lot of solutions available, that solve such an API like this:
